Learn the Legend: Why It’s the Waterford River

Every great river has a story. Ours just happens to start on the right side of the bridge.

The Origin Story

Long ago (okay, not that long ago), a group of proud Waterford locals looked across the shimmering waters of the Niantic River and asked the question no one dared to say out loud:
“Why isn’t this called the Waterford River?”

After all, the river flows past Waterford. We fish it, we boat it, we name our roads after it. And let’s be honest—the view’s better from this side.

The Evidence

  • Mago Point: Home to seafood, sunsets, and salty locals who know what’s up.
  • The Bridge: Half of it is ours. That’s 50%. That’s math.
  • The Vibe: Chill, nautical, slightly rebellious. Just like the river itself.
  • The Sun Game: We win. They get blinding sunrises, we get golden-hour sunsets.
  • Channel Markers Don’t Lie:  Green means go away. Red means you’re home.
  • Oysters vs. Cherrystones? They’ve got gnarly, mud-covered oysters. We’ve got sweet, clean cherrystones that taste like summer.

The Declaration

In 2025, the people of Waterford made it official (well, unofficially official):
We’re claiming the river.
Maps may disagree. GPS may glitch. But the mugs, shirts, and hearts of Waterford say otherwise.

Wear the name. Sip from the mug. Correct your friends.
Because legends aren’t born—they’re rebranded.
